Buying Panamanian coffee in the UK

Panama means Gesha — the floral, tea-like varietal from Boquete and Volcán that holds the world’s coffee auction records. If a bag says Gesha (or Geisha), expect jasmine, bergamot and tropical fruit, and expect to pay for it. Non-Gesha Panamanian washed lots are still clean and elegant at saner prices. Either way it’s a delicate, light-roast filter coffee, not an espresso workhorse.

    Frequently asked questions

Why is Panama Gesha coffee so expensive?
Gesha (Geisha) from Panama is scarce, labour-intensive to grow at altitude, and chases record auction prices on the strength of its extraordinary floral cup. You’re paying for rarity and a genuinely unique flavour — it’s the coffee world’s trophy lot.
Is Geisha the same as Gesha?
Yes — two spellings of the same varietal, which traces back to the Gori Gesha forest in Ethiopia. Panama made it famous; "Gesha" is the spelling most specialty roasters now prefer.
