Choosing a light roast
Light roasts are stopped soon after first crack, keeping the origin’s florals, fruit and bright acidity intact. They’re denser than dark beans, so grind a little finer and use slightly hotter water. They shine as filter, pour-over and AeroPress, and are the way to taste what a specific farm or region actually offers.
Frequently asked questions
- Does light roast have more caffeine?
- Barely — the difference is negligible by the time it’s in your cup. By weight light roast is fractionally higher (less roasting burns off slightly less caffeine), but it’s not a meaningful way to chase a stronger hit.
- Why does my light roast taste sour?
- Usually under-extraction. Grind finer, use water around 94–96°C, and extend the brew time. Light roasts need a bit more work to extract than dark ones, but get it right and the acidity reads as bright, not sour.
