Decaf has come a long way: modern Swiss Water and sugarcane (EA) processes strip caffeine without the flat, hollow taste of older methods, so a good decaf now tastes like proper coffee. These are the caffeine-free specialty options UK roasters are selling right now, compared by price per kilo. Every price below is per kilo so you can compare like for like, and links go straight to the roaster.

Buying decaf coffee in the UK

The process named on the bag matters more for decaf than almost anything else. Swiss Water removes caffeine with nothing but water and carbon filtering; sugarcane (EA) decaffeination uses ethyl acetate derived from fermented sugarcane molasses — usually done in Colombia at origin — and tends to leave a gently sweet, rounded character. Those two account for most UK specialty decaf, and both keep flavour in a way older solvent methods didn’t. Beyond the process, buy decaf like any other coffee: check the roast date, take whole bean if you own a grinder, and match the roast level to your brewer. Decaffeinated beans take on colour faster in the roaster, so most land at medium.

    Frequently asked questions

Does decaf coffee still contain caffeine?
A trace. Coffee sold as decaffeinated in the UK must be at least 99.9% caffeine-free by dry weight, which works out to a few milligrams in a typical cup — against 80mg or more for regular coffee. Enough to be honest about, not enough to keep most people awake.
Swiss Water or sugarcane decaf — which should I pick?
Both produce excellent decaf, so it’s a taste call rather than a safety one. Swiss Water is chemical-free and prized for a clean, unaltered cup; sugarcane (EA) lots tend to be a touch sweeter and rounder, and often cost slightly less because the processing happens at origin. If a bag names neither, ask — specialty roasters are usually proud to say.
Can I get decaf as pods, ground or instant?
Yes — UK roasters now sell decaf across every format: whole bean, ground to order, Nespresso-compatible pods and specialty instant. We keep a separate price-ranked list for each; the links on this page go to the decaf pods, ground and instant slices.
