Buying ground coffee in the UK
The two things that matter with ground coffee are the grind size and the roast date. UK specialty roasters grind to order — you pick cafetière (coarse), filter (medium) or espresso (fine) at checkout — and ship within days of roasting, which is a different product from supermarket ground that may be months old. Once open, keep the bag sealed, cool and dark, and aim to use it within four to six weeks.
Frequently asked questions
- What grind should I choose for my brewer?
- Coarse for cafetière/French press, medium for a filter machine or V60, fine for espresso, and very fine for Turkish. If the roaster offers an "omni" grind it targets the middle and works acceptably across filter methods. When in doubt, most product pages list the options — pick the one named after your brewer.
- How long does ground coffee stay fresh?
- Ground coffee stales faster than whole bean because far more surface area meets air — weeks rather than months. Buy bag sizes you’ll finish inside a month, keep it airtight and out of sunlight, and don’t refrigerate (condensation and odour pickup do more harm than good).
- Is pre-ground coffee worse than whole bean?
- Freshly ground beats pre-ground, all else equal — but all else is rarely equal. Roasted-to-order specialty ground, days from the roaster, comfortably beats stale supermarket whole bean. If you don’t own a grinder, good pre-ground is the honest next-best, not a compromise to apologise for.
