Buying Bolivian coffee in the UK
Bolivia is rare and worth grabbing when it appears. Almost all of it is high-altitude, smallholder-grown around Caranavi in the Yungas, and the cup is clean, sweet and delicate — red apple, caramel and florals. Production is small and export logistics difficult, so UK offerings are usually limited microlots at a premium. Treat it as a special-occasion filter coffee and keep the roast light.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is Bolivian coffee hard to find?
- Bolivia produces very little coffee, much of it from tiny farms, and has historically lost growers to other crops. Combined with difficult landlocked logistics, that keeps volumes low — so when a UK roaster lists a Bolivian lot, it’s usually a small, fleeting microlot.
