Buying Burundian coffee in the UK
Burundi is landlocked and tiny, so supply is seasonal and lots are small — buy when you see it. Most coffee is washed Bourbon from hillside washing stations, named by the station or "colline" (hill). Expect a bright, red-fruited, floral cup in the Rwandan mould. Reputable roasters screen for the occasional "potato defect" that affects the region, so buy from a roaster you trust, keep it light, and brew as filter.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the potato defect in Burundian coffee?
- An occasional defect — caused by a bacterial infection in the cherry — that makes a single bean smell of raw potato when ground. It’s harmless and intermittent, and good roasters hand-sort to minimise it; it’s not a reason to avoid the origin.
- Is Burundian coffee similar to Rwandan?
- Very — they share the same Great Lakes terroir, altitude and Bourbon varietal, so both give bright, floral, red-fruit cups. Burundi is even less common in the UK, which is part of its appeal.
